BEER BELLY

The average Nigerian man suffers from Beer belly, this is due to several factors and the lifestyle of individuals. Excessive Beer Belle increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, etc Beer belly can be caused by several factors such as:
1. Too Much Alcohol consumption
Drinking a lot of alcohol on a regular basis can cause beer belly, the excessive beer consumption and lack of proper exercises leads to net energy imbalance—the individual consumes more usable calories than he expends or discards through elimination. Alcohol contains nothing but empty calories that are stored in the stomach area.
2. Eating too much indigestible Carbohydrates
Eating unrefined carbohydrate like fruit, legumes, vegetables and whole grains is good for you, and helps in weight control. Eating biscuits, cakes, donuts, white bread and other refined carbs does the opposite. Eat too many of these carbs and a person’s insulin level will rise. Their metabolism will slow down, and the excess sugar the body cannot use will be stored as belly fat.
3. Inactive Lifestyle
When a person fails to exercise one can be said to be living an inactive lifestyle, this is common amongst people in the work force that do the 9 to 5 job, they sit at their desk for long hours punching at the keyboard of their computers, get up to take lunch then at the close of work pick up their bags to leave for home, some spend long hours in traffic, get home late and hit their beds only to wake up the next morning and rush off again. It also involves reading too much or using the computer too much. Basically, if you are not moving enough, you tend to burn calories less.  This lifestyle can increase their chances of developing serious health conditions, which could be prevented by exercising.
4. Genetics
Genetics play a role in deciding where the fat distribution goes in your body, and it practically relates to two different body types. Either you are apple- shaped or pear-shaped. If you are pear-shaped, then the fat generally accumulates in your lower areas like your fanny. If you are apple-shaped, then your body has the tendency of storing fat around your midsection, thus leading to belly fat.

3. Excessive Stress
Too much stress makes the body to store more fat, when there is too much stress the body switches to survival mode thereby accumulating excess calorie to be stored in order to prevent starvation when there is no food. Stress also causes the body to produce excessive amounts of cortisol. This hormone moves stored fat to the abdomen area and creates belly fat. According to a study by the Psychology Department at Yale University, women (in particular) who had a higher amount of belly fat were more negative, and lived with higher levels of stress.

Things to Note
If you consume more calories than you expend, your weight will increase, If you consume less calories than you expend, your body weight decrease. Firstly you have to find out how many calories you need in order to meet your desired healthy weight. A dietitian can help you with this.  Once you know the calorie level, you begin to reduce your intake of carbohydrate, beer and red meat. Take the staircase instead of the elevator   Select lean meats and starches for better weight control. Eating smaller, more frequent meals should blunt the insulin response and provide sustained energy throughout the day.   Remember to include complex carbohydrates and protein at each meal or snack. For instance, have a piece of 100% whole grain bread with nut butter, or mix cottage cheese or yogurt with fresh fruit, drink plenty of water too
